KET's Do It Yourself Electronic Field Trips (DIYEFTs)

KETDIYEFTS Wiki has expanded!Originally this wiki was created with the rather narrow focus of giving teachers and students tools they can use to create their own virtual field trips. Since that time variations on this theme within my trainings have caused me to add pages on STEM related media and social studies and arts related media incorporating images and information from the National Endowment for the Humanities project Picturing America. Check out these new resources!
History of KET's Electronic Field Trips:
Since 1995, KET has been creating electronic field trips. In the beginning, the trips were live and an hour long. The web was still in its infancy so the websites connected to our videos were very rudimentary. Now in 2010 with twenty-seven field trips under out belt, our format has changed dramatically. The videos are still compelling but now are divided into short on-demand segments that are available as integrated parts of a rich website full of different kinds of instructional content.

Goal of this workshop:
Now with the advancements in easy-to-use digital still and video cameras, non-linear editing, and a host of web tools, practically any classroom can create their own electronic field trips. By studying how KET's electronic field trips are designed, teachers and students can figure out ways to create their own.

Goal of this Wiki:
This wiki serves as both a source of instructional resources about producing a multi-media electronic field trip and also as a model of how a wiki can serve as a framework and delivery mechanism for such a trip.

A Note about Asynchronous vs. Synchronous Electronic or Virtual Field Trips:
It helps at this point to have some terms defined:

Electronic and Virtual field trips- are synonymous terms. Electronic is a more historical term and was the prevalent word used when KET started creating these trips in 95. Because of this history it has brand name status at KET. Virtual is a more recent term.
Although there is no difference in electronic and virtual, there is definitely a difference in synchronous and asynchronous field trips.
Synchronous field trips- as the term suggests, are field trips that are done in real time from a field trip site using videoconferencing hardware and software. We will not be dealing with that type of field trip during this workshop.

Asynchronous field trips- such as KET's Electronic field trips consist of multimedia residing on a website and are not real time but are available all the time.

Brainstorming and Initial planning of your DIYEFT
When planning your entire field trip, think about both the video content and website content together. Why? First of all for the site to flow you need to think about how the video will be accessed on the site, for instance as one edited video or a series of short vignettes. Secondly, in order to collect all the visuals for your site, stills, video, etc., you need to plan to get them all during your first location visit if possible to avoid having to make return trips. Below are two documents to help you think about the overall layout and composition of your field trip.

The first document is a "First Steps" planning worksheet to help you get an idea of the location and related resources you will need to collect/create to produce a successful trip:

The second document is example of a mind map you can create to plan your site layout. This is actually the initial document I created when planning the EFT to the "Belle of Louisville". I used the Inspiration software program to create this but any mindmapping tool will work. ( a good free web 2.0 one is Visual Understanding Environment -VUE) Even low tech. index cards laid out in the pattern you want can be used for this step:

Starting the Production Process
Now that you have an overall idea of what you want, lets start talking about the video production aspects of your field trip. Below is a PDF with a good overview of video production tips:

After looking at the tip sheet, go to the wiki pages that deal separately with each aspect of video and website production.
